Traditionally, Indian bridal makeup takes in the whole person and consists of 16 items including the dress. These items are known as the Solah Shringar and holds many sympolic aspects of the indian bride.
These consist of the following;
- Tikka bindi are traditionally a red dot worn at the centre of the forehead dropping to the centre of the brow. This is a symbol of femininity and marriage and represents good omens and purity.
The bindi design then extends across the forehead above the eyebrows following their natural shape. The bindi is traditionally painted on using the colours red, white and gold, however these days you can buy a variety of designs made up of mirrors, diamond stones, bells and glitter. - Kajal (Kohl) is makeup applied along the lower lashes and inside waterline of the eyes. This cosmetic has been used by Indian women since ancient times when it was believed to ward off bad luck. Back then it was made at home, but cosmetic research has found traditional khol to be harmful to the eyesight but nowadays you can purchase extremely good khol pencils that have been ophthalmologically tested. Wearing black khol provides a dreamy accent for your eyes, and even though this is an ancient tradition, today wearing khol also known as Kajal is an urban fashion trend in India.
- Nose ring: The nose ring known as a Nath is a traditional piece of bridal jewellery completes the look of the bride, making her look traditional and ethnic
- Jhumka: Earrings made out of gold and is extremely beautiful and heavy.
Mangalsutra: A necklace worn by a married woman designed with a combination of black and gold beads. - Payal: A fine chain worn around the ankle and decorated with ornamental, small bells, made in out of silver. The sound of the bells on the anklet make a rhythm as the bride takes small slow steps towards the ceremonial mandap so that the guests and bridegroom become aware of her entering.
- Bichua: A toe ring worn on the second toe.
- Chudiyan: Bangles worn on the wrist as a sign of marriage.
- Kamarband: A bridal waist ornament that holds the bridal sari in place.
- Pocha's: A bridal hand ornament. The fingers of the bride are adorned with exotic rings. Aarsi is the thumb ring which the bride wears. It mostly has mirror embedded on it and enable the bride to have a glimpse of herself as well as her life-partner
- Angouti: The ring-just like in Western cultures is the symbol of love and commitment
- Bazubandh: An ornament worn on the upper arm. Mughal, Rajasthani or Jaipuri are the most popular designs of baajuband
- Sindoor is a red vermillion that is applied in to the brides hair parting by her groom
- Flowers: Flowers are also a significant part of the traditional Indian bridal look. They symbolize life and happiness.
- Maangteeka: A hair accessory, Maangtika is worn on the central parting of the hair of the bride. It is mostly made out of gold
- Mehendi Designs decorate the hands and feet of the traditional Indian bride with henna. This is an ancient art form and these decorations represent prosperity and play a big role in the shringar. For an Indian bride, the wedding day is the most important day of her life. Most of the girls in our country have lots of dreams for this day, since it marks the beginning of their journey into womanhood.
- Itar is a special fragrance that is applied on to the bride. It emits a special aroma and that helps the bride stay fresh despite the long elaborate rituals performed
