Make-up

Kemmy’s first experience with make-up was at young and mischievous age of 8!
I remember being at home over the long school holidays and one day going through my mums make-up box, picking out the brightest red and darkest maroon lipstick in fancy gold packaging and smearing the red over my lips and onto my cheeks and using my index finger to rub the maroon lipstick over my eyelids to mimic eye shadow. The look on my mums face is equally memorable as she was chatting on the phone and saw me stroll down the stairs looking very pleased with myself. It didn’t stop there, I used to rub toothpaste on my lips when brushing my teeth in the morning making sure the edges were neat and that was my improvisation for a silver lipstick!
It was around then that my fascination with faces, colour, texture, shapes, shadows and blending began to develop.
I was known for doodling side profile faces wherever I could find a space on my textbook or if in a boring lesson… then on the classroom table!
I wanted to take my interest in art further and did just that through my education. It was only during the course of my Foundation study in art and design at Manchester Metropolitan University that I Realised my true passion was not painting on canvas, paper or even fabric…but painting on faces! The rest is history as they say…
Television drama requires attention to detail based on continuity; scenes can be filmed in different orders to what they appear in the final production so as the Makeup Artist it’s my responsibility to make-sure the relevant actor in the scene being shot fits his or her character requirements at that time (i.e. morning scene, at a party, upset or injured etc.). I then work closely with the production team on the floor, watching the shot on a monitor and being on hand to do quick make-up and hair checks in between shots. It can be a long day working on a television set sometimes starting as early as 6am and working a 12 hour shift.
When working on editorial or advertising shoots, my role is to work closely with the photographer and ad agency involved. Creating looks on the models to fit the brief whether it be a natural look or something a bit more glam or contemporary. My work extends to being around on set, ensuring the make-up stays fresh under the lights, taming any fly away hair strands that are picked up on camera and sometimes even helping out with the styling. Attention to detail is vital here as I have to be prepared not only to do make-up on the face but also as and where required-groom nails, do corrective make-up to hide tattoos, marks, scars or even tan lines, for example- I bronzed a models feet and legs to make them look tanned as he was required to look like he is sunbathing on the beach…when in actual fact it was a freezing morning on South Shields beach and the poor model was fighting with goose bumps!
Bridal makeup allows me to extend the creativity and attention to detail and is well recognized among my clients. I believe that less is more and emphasizes on enhancing the natural beauty in every woman.
My goal is to make my clients content, confident and satisfied when they leave my makeup chair.
When considering makeup, be open to options. Products should be long lasting, and feel comfortable on the skin. Even the most natural of looks are created with several products. Don't be under the misconception that “natural” means wearing nothing at all. When a professional applies your makeup, it can look “naturally fresh” in photos.
